In the Footsteps of Norman Maclean Festival

The fifth Norman Maclean Literary Festival took place
September 27-29, 2024 in Missoula.

The festival featured nationally prominent authors who will discuss the theme, Finding Our Place In Nature: The Power of Story. .

The Saturday festival at The Wilma was once again free although registration was required.

Numerous award-winning authors and speakers were asked, “How can we re-imagine and restore our relationship with nature?”

Speakers included Bill McKibben, Marcelo Gleiser, Rick Bass, Rosalyn LaPier, and Liz Carlisle. We are inviting two of the subjects featured in Carlisle’s work, Latrice Tatsey (a representative from the Blackfeet Bison Project) and Nikiko Masumoto, (a California Central Valley farmer). Mari Margil, executive director of the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights will share her work on establishing “the rights of nature”.

Indigenous artist John Potter shared how nature influences his creativity. This year's festival was dedicated to author and nature writer Barry Lopez (1945-2020), whose work is known for its humanitarian and environmental concerns in a career spanning over 50 years,

Most events were free of charge to the public, although tickets were sold for some of the special events such as the cocktail reception will be held at the Dana Gallery on Friday evening.

Four tours on Sunday encouraged people to “find Your place in nature.” These included:

  • tour of the CSKT Bison Range

  • a tour of restoration sites on the Blackfoot River

  • tour the Milltown Dam cleanup site

  • a Forest Bathing afternoon
